Longfellow boasts over 300 years of combined teaching experience.
Longfellow is a 1:1 Chromebook school. The students use many online math and reading programs, including SuccessMaker, Prodigy, and Aleks. The Chromebooks assist teachers in differentiating and individualizing instruction to meet the needs of ALL learners. The students enjoy utilizing their Chromebooks to research and learn new material, practice skills they've already learned, and create projects to demonstrate their knowledge.
Our state testing scores are consistently above the state average.
LEAP – After school tutoring program for Longfellow students.
Handwriting Without Tears & Keyboarding Without Tears – Our mission is to make learning and teaching easy and fun by providing superior educational products, training, and promotional material.
Longfellow has school-wide Title I services with many family engagement opportunities.
Parent Teacher Organization - Our PTO hosts several family functions throughout the school year. They help purchase playground equipment and classroom instructional supplies. They also help provide busing for our field trips.
Interactive School Library with e-book checkout available.
Summer Reading Program – Working in conjunction with the Longfellow Library, students will work to achieve summer reading goals and earn rewards
Summer School – Our summer program is a high academic program. The students rotate through rigorous individualized instruction that focuses on reading and math. This summer the program runs June 4th-29th.
Mitchell School District’s Summer Breakfast and Lunch Program is housed at Longfellow, as well as at GBR, MMS, and MHS.
Kids Club after school program provides supervision and activities for school aged children. Please contact EMBE at 605-996-4311 for more information or to register your child. Scholarships are available.
Educational Field Trips – Students will take an education class trip each school year.
Junior Achievement – Junior Achievement Worldwide is the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating students about workforce readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs.
GATE – Gifted And Talented Education is available for 3rd-5th grade students.
Band – Longfellow offers 5th grade band for all students interested.
Upper elementary students have the opportunity to participate in the South Dakota Festival Choir.
Character Counts - We proudly partner with Arnie's First and Foster to award students for positive character and behavior choices.
Student Council engages students in learning about democracy and leadership with many opportunities to serve school families and our community.
Girls on the Run - Each spring, upper elementary girls have the option to participate in GOTR, a program that encourages and empowers girls to have positive self esteem, to set goals, and to achieve those goals. The girls train throughout their season and celebrate by running a 5K at the end of the program.
