Mr. Daniel Zard teaches welding in the MCTEA program for students of Mitchell High School and several regional schools.

Zard Writes Successful Grant to Upgrade Welding Program

One of the most difficult challenges to career and technical education programs is just keeping up with the technology.  To be effective, programs must teach students on the same kinds of equipment they will see in private industry.  Daniel Zard, MCTEA welding teacher, is all too aware of the program and took the bull by the horns recently to address it.  Noticing a Workforce Education Grant Program available through the S.D. Department of Education and the Governor’s Office, Zard wrote a grant to pay for half of the costs of new, more versatile welders.  This included the ability to perform aluminum welding.  Assembling a team of people with expertise in the field and grant-writing, including MTI faculty, Bryan Hisel of the local Mitchel Office of Economic Development, and grant-writers from the Mitchell Schools, he completed the grant, submitted it to his team for review and revisions, then sent it off to the State.  On April 18, he received the news that this grant was funded.  Combined with 25% from the Mitchell School District and an additional 25% being sought from local industry and the Economic Development office, the grant will allow a complete replacement of current welders with the new, up-to-date units. By the fall of 2018, MCTEA welding students will be learning welding through a whole new set of equipment.
