Modern-day Shelley, Maci Kotrba, takes first place in USD writing competition

From Fred Gwynne’s Herman Munster to the ‘modern Prometheus’s manifestations in the genetic labs of today, Americans have a fascination with the story of Frankenstein’s monster.  Written by Mary Shelley, now 200 years ago, the story was itself the outcome of a competition to write a ghost story among friends, authors all, in the era of Romanticism literature, to take the edge off rainy weather. The University of South Dakota celebrated the bicentennial with a writing symposium, including a ghost story competition among high school students.  Maci Kotra, MHS senior, took first place in the competition and was recognized for such on February 26 in Vermillion.  Her story, You should be afraid, too!, it is said, will leave you sleeping with the bedroom light on.
