Begindergarten

The Mitchell Schools, recognizing that some students are just not quite ready for the full-day Kindergarten experience, provides a program we like to call Begindergarten. In it, students who are at least 5 years old by September 1 of that school year, attend a developmentally appropriate half-day program, staffed by a certified teacher both skilled and trained in early childhood education. The program continued for an entire year. While students who finish such a program are then eligible to move directly to first grade, the vast majority of Begindergartners move, the next year, into Kindergarten, with new academic and school-ready skills under their belt and year of extra maturity behind them. Begindergarten is offered, free of charge, at all three of our elementary schools: Gertie Belle Rogers, L.B. Williams, and Longfellow.
